Types of Acne Scar Treatment

Acne can often be embarrassing and hard to deal with. After it is gone, it may leave behind some scars that are hard to heal if one does not know the proper way to get rid of them. Acne scar treatment is however, very much possible.

There are two types of acne scars. The raised ones, meaning they appear like pimples and the depressed ones that leave a shallow hole. For the raised scars, there are several creams and ointments that are available for getting rid of acne scars and preventing others from forming on the new skin. One of the most effective creams is cortisone. The cortisone cream has the ability to reduce any swelling that is caused by the acne. After the swelling, one can get rid of any scars by the use of ascorbic acid which is present in vitamin C.

Apart from ointments one can use gels. The silicone gel is mostly used for the raised acne scars. It makes the skin softer and enables the scars to slowly fade away. Apart from that, there is the use of laser. The laser removal or laser treatment requires one to visit a dermatologist. The laser is used to remove the top layer of the skin and letting the inner, smoother layer replace it. Only well-trained personnel are allowed to operate the laser for skin treatment.

Other than that, there is also the option of injecting medicine in to the skin to prevent the swelling and the pain caused by the acne. This medicine also prevents the scars from forming once the acne heals. This mode of acne scar treatment requires the patient to go to the doctor after a few weeks to have the dermatologist look at the progress.

For the depressed acne scars, they can be treated by chemical peeling. This means that the upper skin is peeled off to give way for new skin to grow. The pores that are left are then filled with protein to stimulate skin growth. The most common protein used is collagen. Although some other types of proteins are also used – collagen as mentioned is the most common and widely used.

For the depressed scars, the doctors may also use the skin tightening method. In this, the dermatologist uses radiofrequency to make the skin tight so that the pores are less visible. This method however has side effects as the person gets a pink face for about 3 days. The method is however very effective although it requires one to take good care of the face in the sense that they are required to apply sunscreen on a daily basis and have regular dermatologist appointments.

There are some methods that will work for both the raised acne scars and the depressed ones. One of these is the cryosurgery. This is a process where it requires the freezing of skin tissue so that the skin that has the scars can fall off leaving fresh skin. Most dermatologists do not recommend this method for people with colored skin because it can leave spots for a while.

Depending on the type of acne scar and the patient’s preference, there are readily available treatments. Most of the treatments for acne scars take time to work so one has to be patient and see the results of any kind of treatment they are using. If it does not work, they can try another option.
